Shar Jackson was enrolled in the Al Fann Theatrical Ensemble at the young age of three. Even with this knowledge, it’s still a bit of surprise to learn that Shar Jackson earned the Director’s Guild of America Award of Distinction at the age of thirteen, for writing, directing, and producing a school film.
Jackson began her modeling career through Barbizon, Ubiquitous, and the John Robert Powers agencies and secured regional commercials after learning acting with Bob Feldman. She then went on to make guest appearances on shows like the ABC show “Hangin’ with Mr. Cooper”, “Roc” and “Getting By”, and national commercials soon followed. In 1993, Jackson made her first screen appearance in Tamra Davis’ and Marty Thomas’ comedic rap CB4 starring Chris Rock. Her next project was recurring appearances as Janelle on “South Central” in May 1994 and My So-Called Life.
In 1995 she did a guest spot in an episode of Minor Adjustments and then The Steve Harvey Show. Shar Jackson is best known for her role as Niecy Jackson, best friend to title character, Moesha played by R&B singer, Brandy. The show aired on UPN and Jackson’s comedic ability was highlighted as a regular opposite Moesha from 1996 through 2001. In 1999, she guest starred on the “Prom Misses, Prom Misses” episode of Clueless. She has also guest starred over the years in “Search Party, “The Parkers”, “Girlfriends” and “The Proud Family” as well as TV movie, Dirty Famous.
Shar Jackson took her acting talent to the silver screen for movies such as the 1996 TV movie Grand Avenue and Good Burger with Kel Mitchell and Keenan Thompson. The Ex-Wives Club featured Jackson, with Marla Maple and Angie Everhart and was an ABC reality series was designed to assist men and women who had recently been through a separation or divorce. Jackson returned to reality TV by appearing in the seventh season of Celebrity Fit Club: Boot Camp in 2010.
Shar’s desire to sing motivated her to create the pop and R&B group, Mpulz, an all girl group, featured on the 2001 Princess Diaries movie soundtrack, which disbanded after releasing just one album. She won the MTV’s Celebrity Rap Superstar title in 2007 over Kendra Wilkinson. Shar Jackson stated she participated in the contest to honor actor Lamont Bentley who was obsessed about rap but passed away in a car accident. Bentley had played Niecey’s brother, Hakeem, in the show Moesha. Missy Eliot’s music video, “One Minute Man” features Jackson as the hotel hostess.
Jackson’s continued desire for a movie career found her co-starring in the 2001 movie Love & Basketball with Omar Epps and Sanaa Lathan and in Family Reunion: The Movie in 2003. The year 2009 was a busy one for Jackson as she appeared in the film “I Do…I Did!” in addition to appearing in the dance movie entitled Steppin: The Movie. Shar plays Alexa in The House that Jack Built released in 2011 which stars Joe Mantegna, Gail O’Grady, and Kris Black. Jackson also landed a starring role in Blood Effects released in 2011, a scathing horror satire about movie making in Hollywood.
In a Laguna Beach Jean interview, Shar Jackson stated her favorite director of all time is Wes Craven and expressed an avid interest in horror films. With her movie roles in 2011 she certainly seems to be moving her career in the direction of that genre.
